Gregor Morris has been confirmed as the #1 9U player in the South of Scotland. He played in that position for the South in the County Cup, held at Newlands this week.
As the #1 player for the South, he was obviously up against some very good players but he played some fantastic tennis. In the singles, his 1st match was against Robbie Baird, the West's #1 (and ranked #1 in Scotland at 9U). Gregor actually beat Robbie when they last played in the East of Scotland champs at the beginning of June but this time Robbie came out on top in 2 tight sets*.
(*A set in 9U tennis is a 7 point tie-break.)
In his next singles match, he beat Lewis MacIntosh, the East of Scotland #1 in straight sets 7-5,7-1 and played some great stuff.
His last singles match was v Euan MacKenzie (currently ranked #2 in Scotland behind Robbie Baird but beat Robbie in the final of the Scottish closed champs 2 weeks ago and a seriously good player). In a terrific match, Gregor took the 1st set 7-3 but Euan came back to take the next 2 tight sets 7-5, 7-5.
Gregor should be proud of the way that he played - lots of positive attacking tennis.
In the doubles, it was a similar story, Gregor and partner Ewan Henderson comfortably beat the East pair but lost tough matches v the West and the North.
Gregor then played the Kilmarnock orange ball Ayrshire Summer Challenge tournament on Sunday and won that.
Our other young players should note that the Coylton red, orange, green and 12U Ayrshire Summer Challenge tournaments are on during week beginning 11 August - see a previous post on the website for the timetable.
